The idea of working from home can seem like an extremely appealing one. You can set your own hours, dress however you like and work in a way that is tailored to yourself and nobody else. However, working in the comforts of your own home can also be filled with distractions. These could range from chores, pets, family members, television or even the sofa. This is why it’s important to remain productive and find ways of working well.
Working on the sofa, in the kitchen or in bed is all part of the freedom of working at home. However, when you scatter bits of work around, your ideas and productivity will become scattered too. So, why not find a space in your home that will hold your computer, files and other work necessities that you can access quickly and easily.
Once you create your designated space, why not bring it to life with your favourite photos or ornaments. This will actually make you want to be in the area. After all, your workspace will be extension of your life and an area that you’ll be spending a lot of time in. Therefore, you should make it look and feel as pleasant as possible.
One of the perks of working at home is that it gives you the freedom to control exactly when you work. However, we all have times when we are more productive and times when our brains just won’t function. So, identify the times when your brain is at its best and create a solid working schedule based around those times.
Make sure you take regular breaks. Working non-stop throughout the day simply isn’t healthy. Your mind needs rest at certain points to re-energise itself. So, step away from your desk every hour or two for a coffee or to stretch your legs.
It’s always a good idea to create a calendar in order to keep you on task. That way, when you wake up in the morning, you’ll know what you’re doing that day. This is a prime way to stay focused and to not get distracted. After all, if you have a set plan in place, then it’s much harder to drift off the path.
Working from home can be extremely beneficial for a number of reasons – providing you get the balance right. So take your time, find your niche and remain focused at all times.
